Cyber Safety:

What do to if your personal email has been hacked.

If your email has been hacked, you should IMMEDIATELY do the following:

  • Change your email password!
  • Change your security question(s).
  • Add two-factor authentication. Many times, this requires you to enter a 4-digit code sent to your cell phone.
  • Check your email settings. Many times hackers will change your forwarding settings so that they receive a copy of all your emails!
  • Change your passwords on all accounts that you use your email to log into.
  • Report it to your email provider. There is usually a "report spam" option somewhere.
  • Inform your email contacts so that they are aware.
  • Scan your computer for viruses!
  • Bring your computer to a service vendor like Geek Squad at Best Buy or Nerds to Go to run a virus scan if you do not know how.
  • Be careful of what you share on social media! Hackers scan Facebook, Twitter and Instagram constantly to find personal information about you. Then they use your personal information in a fabricated email to appear as if it's someone you know, enticing you to trust them.
  • If you've been hacked multiple times, get a new email address!

Change your passwords regularly (at least every 30 - 60 days) for all of your accounts, not just your email accounts.
