Minutes of Meeting

A special meeting of the Finance Committee of the Rocky Hill Board of Education was held on Tuesday, December 6, 2005, in the superintendent's conference room. Present were: Anne Schmidt, Neil Geldof, Peter Arico, Nadine Bell, Charles McMonigle, Rene Rivard, Catherine Vargas, Jennifer Viggiano-Grosse, Supt. of Schools J. A. Camille Vautour, and Director of Finance & Operations Gregory P. Turansky. The meeting was called to order at 8:40 a.m.

Mr. Turansky requested that the Committee consider a rate increase for substitute teachers. He indicated that the district is having difficulty obtaining an adequate number of substitutes and distributed the results of a survey showing that Rocky Hill rates are substantially lower than surrounding towns. Following discussion, the Committee agreed to recommend to the full Board the requested rate increase.

Mr. Turansky next presented a status report on the 2005-06 budget. He indicated that this budget is running very close to breakeven and that although he is not anticipating any problems in ending the year with a balanced budget, he is also not projecting a significant surplus at this time.

Finally, a brief discussion on the construction of the 2006-07 budget was held. Mr. Turansky sought and received approval to budget for an increase in the rate paid to part-time paraprofessionals who have not received an increase since 1998. In addition, the stipend for the high school greenhouse coordinator will be added to the budget.

The meeting adjourned at 9:45 a.m.
