Board of Education

Facilities Committee

November 9, 2006

Minutes of Meeting

A special meeting of the Facilities Committee of the Rocky Hill Board of Education was held on Thursday, November 9, 2006, in the superintendent's conference room.  Present were:  Committee Chair Peter Arico; Committee Members Nadine Bell and Rene Rivard; Director, Board Chairman Neil Geldof; Board Member Charles McMonigle; Finance & Operations Gregory P. Turansky; and Supt. of Schools J. A. Camille Vautour.  The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m.

Enrollment Projection Update

Dr. Vautour reviewed Mr. Prowda’s most recent enrollment projections.  He noted a significant increase in the projections, particularly for the 2015-16 school year.  Last year Mr. Prowda projected 2,710 for the year in question.  This year, Mr. Prowda projects 2,863 for the year 2015-16, an increase of 153 students.

Dr. Vautour pointed out that the Schoenhardt report used an average growth of 15 students per year.  Mr. Prowda is suggesting an average growth of about 30 students per year.  The Committee concurred that the most recent projections buttress the need for a building project.

Classroom Summary

Mr. Arico shared a summary of classroom use across the district.  Identified were not only actual classrooms, but also other areas being used for instructional spaces, such as storerooms, stages, etc.  The Committee requested information on how many teachers share classrooms or have to move from one room to another during the day.

Homeland Security

Mr. Rivard asked about the availability of Homeland Security funds for boards of education.  Dr. Vautour indicated he would follow up with Barbara Gilbert.

The meeting adjourned 9:15 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

J. A. Camille Vautour
