Rocky Hill Sidekicks Soccer

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As the school year comes to a close, I want to make families aware of a new recreational program for our children with special needs. Working with a group of interested parents, and town and school district personnel, we will be introducing Rocky Hill Sidekicks Soccer through the Parks and Recreation Department this fall. Sidekicks Soccer is a non-competitive program where school-age children with special needs will have fun while participating in soccer-related activities. Developed along the lines of our Sea Cubs swimming program and Little League Challenger Baseball, Sidekicks Soccer will be held on Saturday mornings at McVicar Field from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The first session is scheduled for Saturday, September 13 and the program will run through Saturday, November 1 (please note that no session will be held Columbus Day weekend). Just as Sea Cubs featured "buddies" from the Rocky Hill High School swim team, Sidekicks will recruit "buddies" from our high school soccer teams. Our high school varsity girls' coach, Annmarie Catania, will be serving as the Sidekicks coach. The Parks and Recreation department has provided me with an informational flyer which I have attached.

As I have noted in previous messages regarding recreational programs for our children with special needs, I want to ensure that all studentsregardless of the obstacles they face, have the opportunity to participate in fun, enjoyable, and rewarding physical activities. Looking toward the future, the advent of Sidekicks will ensure that we are offering "three seasons" of sporting activities for our kids. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to touch base with Sebby Sorrentino at sorrentin@hartford.edu or 860-559-5758. Sebby, who has been actively involved in Sea Cubs and Little League Challenger Baseball, has agreed to serve as the point person for any parents seeking additional information. In addition, please note that registration for Sidekicks Soccer will occur through the Parks and Recreation Department. I am pleased to report that there will be no fees charged for participation in the program; however, space is limited and registration will occur on a first-come, first-serve basis. The phone number for Parks and Recreation is 860-258-2772

Have a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you and your children on the soccer field in September!

Dr. Mark F. Zito
