Dear Parent/Guardian,

With winter approaching and the school year well underway, I want to make families aware that the Rocky Hill Parks and Recreation Department will once again be offering the popular Sea Cubs program to school-aged children with special needs. Sea Cubs is a structured swimming program held on Sundays throughout the winter months in collaboration with the members of the Rocky Hill High School varsity swim team. The high school swimmers serve as “Sea Buddies” – mentoring, guiding, and working side-by-side in the water with our Sea Cubs participants. Our high school varsity swimming coach, Ms. Lisa Cooney, will once again be serving as the Sea Cubs instructor. All Sea Cubs sessions will be held in the pool at Rocky Hill High School and will be supervised by certified life guards.

Please make sure to register your child for the Sea Cubs program through the Rocky Hill Parks and Recreation Department. The informational flyer is attached to this email message. The first sessions will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2015. The program is scheduled through Sunday, March 15, 2015. (No sessions are scheduled for February 8 and February 15.) Due to increased demand, two sessions will be offered this season (Session 1, 12:00 – 12:45 p.m.; and Session 2, 12:45 – 1:30 p.m.); hence, the program will be able to accommodate a greater number of participants. Please note that families may register individual children for one time slot only. Registration is conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis and will begin on Monday, November 17. The phone number for the Parks and Recreation Department is 860-258-2772. Please direct all inquiries to Ms. Livia Jacobs, Aquatics Director.

As I have noted in previous letters regarding the Town of Rocky Hill’s recreational programs for children with special needs, there has been a concerted effort to ensure that all children, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter, have the opportunity to participate in structured, enjoyable, and rewarding physical activities. Sidekicks soccer just concluded its incredibly successful first season last weekend, and I know that a number of children who participated in Sidekicks are anxiously awaiting the start of the Sea Cubs season. Coupled with Challenger Little League Baseball in the spring, every consideration is being made to ensure that Rocky Hill children with special needs have an opportunity to participate in “three seasons” of sporting activities. Please note that questions about the program may also be directed to Sebby Sorrentino at sorrentin@hartford.edu or 860-559-5758. Sebby, who is actively involved with Challenger Little League BaseballSidekicks, and Sea Cubs, has agreed to serve as the parent liaison for any families seeking additional information.

Enjoy the remaining weeks of fall. We look forward to seeing you and your children when the Sea Cubs make a splash in January!

Dr. Mark F. Zito

Superintendent of Schools
