Graduation Requirements

Standards for Graduation
Within the total number of credits required to graduation (22 credits), the following minimum standards must be met by students to be considered eligible for the diploma from Rocky Hill High School:

  • Four credits of English
  • Three credits of Social Studies. One credit must be U.S. History and one-half credit must be in Civics.
  • Three credits of Mathematics, one of which must be in Basic Algebra I or its equivalent.
  • Two credits of Science, one of which must be a Biological Science and one a Physical Science.
  • Three credits of Art/Humanities/Music and Vocational/Technical. The following distribution is acceptable: two credits in the arts area and one credit in the vocational area OR two credits in the vocational area and one in the arts area.
  • One credit in an advanced course which would be in addition to the three credits indicated above; such credits to be in arts, vocational or foreign language fields (see Advanced Level Courses in the Program of Studies).
  • One credit in Physical Education
  • One-half credit in Health.
  • One-half credit in Computer Essentials
  • An additional four credits in elective courses.

Total number of credits required for graduation: 22

In addition to the already established standards of graduation outlined in the Program of Studies, we have also established specific skills in which students must demonstrate proficiency in the areas of research, writing, mathematics, oral presentation, and technology.

They may achieve proficiency in these five areas in the following ways:

  1. Score at a level of three (3) or better on each sub-test of the CAPT or
  2. Score a forty (40) or greater on each the math and verbal sections of the PSAT or
  3. Score a four hundred (400) or greater on each the math and verbal sections of the SAT or
  4. Score a three (3) or better on rubrics created for research, writing, mathematics, oral presentation, and technology and applied to approved course specific projects.

Students have four years to demonstrate their proficiency in these five areas. The vast majority of our students will meet this requirement by achieving the appropriate scores on standardized tests as indicated in numbers 1-3 above. Those students who do not achieve these specific scores will be able to meet this requirement through number four above. Certain projects in each subject area have been designated as “graduation requirement” projects. Each project includes one or more of the skill areas of research, writing, mathematics, oral presentation, and technology. As students complete these projects, they will be assessed through a rubric based upon a scale of one through four. A score of 3 or 4 is considered proficient.
