CAPT -
Connecticut Academic Performance Test
Sophomores are required to take the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT). The CAPT assesses critical skills needed for workplace and advanced studies and is given in the spring. For additional information, visit www.state.ct.us/sde.
Advanced Placement (AP) Tests
The Guidance Department conducts the Advanced Placement tests in May, allowing students to earn college credits. Click here for 2012 Advanced Placement test dates. Over 90% of colleges grant college credit based on AP test results. Check with the college as to appropriate test grade standards at their institutions.
Students wishing to take exams that are scheduled for the same time slot should ask their AP Coordinator in Guidance to contact AP Services for more information about taking one of the exams on an alternate date.
College Board Testing – SATs
Juniors who plan on attending a college that requires the SAT should plan to take this test in the spring. You may retake the test as often as you’d like, but it’s usually recommended taking it a second time by the beginning of your senior year. Some colleges require students to take the SAT Subject Tests. These one-hour subject area tests are offered on several dates during the year. If you plan to apply “Early Decision” or “Early Action” to a college, you should take the tests during Junior year. Be sure to see your counselor if you are uncertain about what tests you should take or when to take them.
ACT
The American College Testing Program (ACT) is another assessment used for college admission. The ACT includes four multiple-choice tests in academic areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Reading, with results as separate scores, plus a composite score. There is an optional writing portion for an additional fee. Be sure to research if colleges look at ACT and/or SAT scores. For more information, please see www.actstudent.org.
PSAT/NMSQT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test provides firsthand practice for the SAT Test. It also provides a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship program. The PSAT measures critical reading skills, math, problem-solving skills, and writing skills and is offered once a year in October. Click here for information on accessing My College QuickStart, an online resource to help prepare for the SAT using a student's PSAT results.
